Rainy Season: Fashola Charges Residents To Stop Acts That Endanger The Environment

Mar 3, 2010 - As the rainy season approaches, Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) if Lagos State on Wednesday charged residents of the State to stop those things that endanger the environment such as bad management of drains, bad disposal of refuse and silting of drainages.

According to Governor Fashola, who spoke in an interview with Aviation Correspondents after he returned from Abuja where he attended a meeting of the Governors Forum with the Acting President, since all the drainages were built with tax payers money, everyone must ensure that they work.

Said he: “As we are having extreme weather conditions of heat, I expect that as we are seeing even in Europe where snow is falling in places where it did not fall many years ago, we would not be insulated. Our job here is that we have advanced warning. We can prepare. We have time”.

“There is a plan in place right from the Local Government to State level. Everybody should get involved. Take the monthly sanitation exercise more seriously but take daily sanitation exercise as a way of life and a habit and that is the only way that we can ensure that we mitigate any adverse effect” .

Governor Fashola explained that the government is not an abstract entity but includes everyone, stressing that: “let us all roll up our sleeves, clean up our drainages and manage water properly. Ensure best practices”.

While citing examples of what is happening in distant locations, Governor Fashola said the whole of France was flooded a few days ago, mudslides affected Uganda about two days ago while there was an earthquake in Chile.

The Lagos State helmsman added that there have been warnings on Tsunami and heavy winds in some other parts of the world, adding that Lagos is part of the global village and everything should be done to prevent the negative impact of Climate Change.

“We are in a safe zone. We are in a safe area but it is not enough to continue to ride on our luck”, Governor Fashola cautioned.
